1.0 Introduction to Central Research Laboratories
The Central Research Laboratories (CRL) within the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya (UM), serve as premier hub of shared, high-technology advanced instrumentation. Designated to meet the ever-evolving needs of modern science, the CRL offers both specialized advanced tools and essential general equipment. Our primary goal is to democratize access state-of-the-art technologies, reducing the logistical and financial burden on researchers. By providing a seamlessly integrated and well-equipped environment, we aim to catalyse productivity and elevate the caliber of research outcome. Beyond hardware, the CRL offers laboratory space, workbenches and workstations to foster a collaborative research ecosystem. We also function as a centre for training and provide expert sample analysis services for both internal and external users.
Vision: To be a leading central research facility championing the advancement and excellence of research within the Faculty of Medicine and the University.
Mission: To empower high-quality research and innovation through robust laboratory ecosystem, training and specialized services.
1.1 Objectives and functions of the unit
• To provide UM researchers with seamless access to cutting-edge technologies at optimized costs.
• To provide a conducive, high-performance laboratory environment enhances research quality.
• To serve as a strategic platform for adoption and utilization of frontier technologies.
• To provide professional analytical services for both internal and external users.
2.0 Laboratories and facilities under CRL:
2.1 Dato Mahmood Merican Medical Biotechnology Laboratory (MBL)
• MBL comprises three major sections: Proteomics facility, Genomics facility and Calibration unit.
• It acts as a centralized hub, housing the faculty’s sophisticated instrumentation and foundational research tools.
• It offers expert sample analysis and serves as a training centre for specialized research methodologies.
2.2 Translational Core Laboratory (TCL)
• TCL provides a comprehensive platform to foster synergy between clinicians and basic scientists.
• It offers essential infrastructure and educational resources for those navigating the complexities of clinical research.
• It houses a supply centre for specialized cell culture and molecular biology reagents.
2.3 Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory (CMBL)
• CMBL provides a focused research environment for molecular work, catering to postgraduates and researchers in UM.
• It is equipped with a mammalian cell culture facility, general molecular biology workstations, laboratory benches, and collaborative group spaces.
2.4 FOM Supply Store
● The FOM Supply Store provides a streamlined procurement platform for common laboratory consumables. Launched in 2015, the store was established to eliminate the traditional "paperwork hurdle," replacing a laborious procurement process with a fast, onsite solution. In 2017, the facility evolved with the launch of ResearchCart360, an online portal designed to better accommodate the dynamic needs of the UM research community.
